If anyone deserved impeachment, it's Bushco. Unfortunately, like Poet said, until someone or something can make the elephants in the room see that they serve at the "pleasure of the people," it wouldn't get far. We can't even get the majority needed to override a veto on the war funding. Even though I can't imagine anyone with a half a brain wanting to give these guys another penny of our money without timelines, benchmarks, consequences, and a contingency plan. On Washington Week last night the most frightening thing I heard is that the rumor in DC is that if the surge fails, there is no contigency plan. Bush is looking for a war czar to carry this thing out as long as it takes to claim some kind of "success". Reckless, feckless, incompetent, and crooked would get most people impeached, but these are unique times and the message of fear is very strong. Blowing up parliment buildings and bridges gives the Repubs more opportunity to say, "See, these are dangerous evil people and we can't lose in Iraq."

I think impeachment is always on the table. However, I fear we won't tackle other pressing issues if we're tied up in a mock impeachment. What have we gotten done in the last six years? No progress on Social Security & Medicare, can't get the minimum wage increase approved, no progress on healthcare reform or tax reform, no progress on climate change, no progress on energy policy, no future transportation policy, an army stretched to the breaking point, a national guard that is not serving the states they come from, a lack of preparedness for national/natural disasters, reduced credibility and authority in the world, no action on Darfur, Paul Wolf-a-witless is screwing up the World Bank while he's busy getting his GF a raise and a new job...need I say more? This is the blog I meant to write a while back--the real hidden costs of the war are buried among all the things that haven't gotten done or have gotten worse in the past six years.

And it started out such a nice day today...now I'm pissed! Imagine how it feels to have this going on in your country and anyone who objects or says what we've said gets hauled away in the middle of the night and isn't heard from again. For now, it's still a great country.
