Call me a crank, but I'm just not willing to jump on the Obama bandwagon yet. No, I ain't harboring no secret love for Joe Biden (I prefer open loathing), Tom Vilsack (So last millennium; still wearing those godawful DLC ties) or progressive perennial Dennis Kucinich. And don't even get me started on Hillary.
No, my problem with Obama is I don't see any there there. At least not yet. In comments on Digby's site today, writer John H. Farr of Taos, New Mexico calls Obama "The Man Who Stands for Nothing Except Himself'.the Democratic Britney with a $2M book advance who hasn't beaten anyone in a major election except Alan Keyes."
The pundits seem to especially love Obama for his endless vague and somewhat scolding pronouncements about What Democrats Should Now Be Doing---which mostly seem to involve "moving on" and "reaching out to people of faith."
Well, hell, I'm one of those people of faith. I go to church every Sunday. And as far as I'm concerned, campaigning politicians should stop showing up in pulpits period and I don't care whose pulpit or what party. Enough! Get out. Get out. Get out'..I mean, do we have to be like Jesus going berserk in the temple and take a whip to these salespeople?
And what does all this "move on" talk mean? Should we Dems skip Congressional hearings on the fake intelligence that led us into Iraq or the billions in government contracts that vanished into Halliburton coffers with precious little to show for it all? Or on who ultimately signed off on torturing our prisoners? Or the wholesale spying on the phone and e-mail records of millions of American citizens?
I know the "mainstream" media and previous Congress, good little co-dependents all, didn't want to mention this stuff for fear of being called shrill, partisan or unpatriotic. So I can see why they're cheered up by Obama's hinting that maybe Dems should let bygones be bygones. I mean, hell, what's a half million dead Iraqis and nearly 3,000 dead American soldiers between old Beltway warriors. Move along, people. Nothing to see here. Time to move on.
But to where? Why? How? And if we don't try to get to the truth, what's to stop all this from happening all over again, sooner rather than later.
Yes, of course, Obama has great looks, name recognition and has a million-dollar smile. So did Harold Ford and he lost the Tennessee Senate race to a mediocre Republican mayor whose ads accused Harold of liking white women too much. John Edwards is a brilliant lawyer with great hair. The Repubs called him the Breck Girl. John Kerry had a heroic war record. They swiftboated him. Bill Clinton was one of the smartest, most charismatic and relentlessly courteous presidents we've ever had. The Repubs impeached him over a blow job.
My point being that anyone who thinks a good-looking Democrat with a million-dollar smile, on-camera charisma and not much of a political record can dodge the Republican slime machine is crazy. Ain't no such escape. So all the charisma stuff won't be enough. You actually have to stand for something. Loud and clear. Without hedging. Without hewing to a cautious script. And platitudes alone won't cut in in 2008. That's all we've heard for eight years from W and look what a good mood we're all in.
So my question is, beyond the hype, besides believing that we should all sort of just get along. what does Obama stand for? Where does he stand on single-payer health care? Getting our troops out of Iraq within a year? Or anything specific?

I am not as skeptical of Obama. He was the keynote speaker at the national conference of Spritual Progressives - an offshoot of peace organization Tikkun. I have long hoped for a Democrat with courage - and Obama has questioned the Iraq war before America cared who he was.

While I back Dennis Kucinich, I do not fear Obama as much as the other candidates. Your thoughts on Kucinich somehow do not surprise me, with the media consistently mentioning his previous run.
Dennis has always been a perennial candidate for the positions he has held: Mayor, Senator, US House. He is stronger than most Dems on key issues, and deserves the position more than so-called "electable" candidates like John Kerry.
